MODI Stove.
An innovative cooking stove designed to replace open fires and save lives.

Making a modular stove approachable in Ethiopia.

The Challenge

With millions of families suffering from the effects of routine smoke inhalation, can women in Ethiopia be persuaded to replace their traditional wood-burning stove with a cleaner and safer alternative?

But with over 80 different spoken languages, low literacy and thousands of years of ingrained tradition, how to promote, entice and communicate the benefits of a new and unknown modular stove design to women across Ethiopia and ultimately ensure better and healthier futures?

Solution

Inspired by the optimism and vibrancy found in traditional clothes worn by Ethiopian women, a palette of eye-catching colours combined with simple letter shapes creates an approachable brand which is optimistic, simple, and welcoming.

Like the stove itself, the logo letters reposition and join together, emphasising its unique modular design and creating a sense of closeness and community.

The illustrations are universally understandable, ensuring that all communities comprehend the benefits of the new stove: safer, cleaner, healthier and simple to use.

Reflecting Ethiopia's vibrant and close communities, colourful letters reposition and join together like the modules of the stove itself.

Literal and simple Illustrations allow people of all languages across Ethiopia to understand the stove’s benefits.
